How can I get started planning my event at Northrop?

Surdyk's Catering is the exclusive caterer for all events, seminars, and meetings held in Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota. If you have already booked a space at Northrop, you'll want to get in touch with us so we can help you begin the planning process. If you haven't booked a space at Northrop but are interested in availability and rates, please contact Northrop Audience Services/Front of House Manager, David Russell, by email here.

 

David and his team will help you secure the space and will custom design floor plans that suit your needs, including all tables, chairs, and any special AV requests. Surdyk's will take it from there, working with you to create a perfect menu and atmosphere for your guests. Surdyk's Catering provides all food and beverage, linens, floral, decor, and any other special touches to add a little extra flair to the party. 

 

How do I place an order?

The best way to start the event planning process is by email. We recommend that you allow a minimum of two weeks to plan your event. Your Surdyk's Event Coordinator will ask you a number of questions about your event, including date, time, guest counts, desired service style and menu, and budget. From there, we will get to work crafting a proposal based on your needs. Please note that all serviced events must be finalized and paid a minimum of 7 days in advance. Large events may require extra notice. Orders finalized less than 7 days in advance that we are able to fulfill will incur an additional 10% late booking service charge. Please refer to the contract attached to your event proposal for cancellation policies.

What are my payment options?

Payment must be arranged at the time the order is finalized; we accept all major credit cards, U of M Purchasing cards, and checks. Surdyk's Catering is also enrolled in the new U of M Payment Plus Program through US Bank; 

we highly recommend it as a fast, easy, secure way to provide payment for your event. Payment plans with an

initial deposit and final billing are set up on a case by case basis; please inquire with your Event Coordinator for

more information. 

 

How much should I order?

Our menus list the number of servings for each item; however, these numbers are not always static when planning a large menu. Please let us know what items you are interested in serving so we can recommend a menu scaled to your group size. 

 

What are my service options?

Surdyk's Catering offers a variety of service options to best suit your event. Some events may only require a set up before and a clean up after, while others will be better served with a team of waitstaff, bartenders, chefs, and event managers. Your Event Coordinator will make service recommendations as a part of your proposal. 

 

Can you accommodate special dietary needs?

We are happy to work with you to create a menu that will satisfy every guest. Many of our menu items can be adapted to suit vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free diets, and specific allergies. 

 

What are my options for tableware?

We provide high-quality, compostable disposable plates, flatware, napkins, and tumblers for your order. We also offer the option of full rentals: china, glassware, flatware, linen napkins. Inquire for selection and pricing. 

 

What are my decor options?

Surdyk's Catering has its own supply of white and black table linens that are used for the majority of events. A selection of maroon and gold linens are available on request. Floral arrangements, votive candles, and specialty linens can also be arranged to give the space a more custom feel.
